High Fiber Diabetic Diet

Type II diabetes or NIDDM (non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus) is closely related to obesity and overweight. A good percentage of individuals suffering fro type II diabetes are obese or overweight. It is also proved that by healthy diabetic diet and regular exercise if the body weight is maintained to normal the risk of developing the disease (type II diabetes) can be reduced or prevented or delayed. Although genetics play an important role in the causation of type II diabetes (NIDDM), obesity also play a vital role in causation of type II diabetes. For type I diabetes the body weight does not play an important role in its causation and many of the patients with type I diabetes are lean and thin or underweight.

High fiber diets can reduce the incidence of type II diabetes mellitus by keeping the body weight under control (as obesity or overweight is one of the common causes of type II diabetes). Many studies were conducted to which shows that change of dietary habit (diet of high fiber content and lower calorie diets) and lifestyle (healthy lifestyle with proper diet and regular physical activities and exercise) can reduce the incidences of type II diabetes to a large extent. Diabetics Diet

The most important point in preparing diabetic diet is the modification of type of carbohydrate and amount of fiber and carbohydrate that should be considered. More carbohydrate should be of complex type starches rather than simple sugars as they breakdown more slowly to release glucose in blood, which can increase blood sugar level very fast, which can cause harm to the diabetic.

The fiber is present in complex carbohydrates that are present in grains, vegetables and other starches slow the glucose absorption and help in management of diabetes. The emphasis should be more on the high fiber foods instead of high fiber supplements available in the market.

Low fiber cereals: examples of low fiber cereals are refined rice, bread, noodles, macaroni etc. (more…)

Signs of a Diabetes Symptom

If you have two or more of these pre-diabetes symptoms you should seriously consider getting yourself checked out:

1) If you find you are excessively thirsty, not just after extreme exercise or hot weather.

2) You seem to constantly have a dry mouth – even if you’ve just had a drink.

3) You find you are having to urinate frequently.

4) You have unexpected weight loss or gain (even though you may be constantly hungry and eating well. Of course you may be eating the wrong things which would probably make your pre-diabetes symptom worse).

5) You feel lethargic. You always feel as if you’ve got no energy; you are weak and tired all the time.

6) Sometimes your vision is blurry – be careful, untreated eye problems caused through diabetes can lead to blindness. You should have regular eye checks, especially as you get older because your eyes can be the early warning signal for many diseases – not just diabetes.

7) You have cuts or sores or bruises (especially on your feet) that are slow to heal.

If you experience excessive itching or soreness in the genital area or yeast infections (which can be misdiagnosed as thrush) it may be a sign of too much sugar in your urine. (more…)
